Today in class we had a visit from Jesse Miller who spoke about social media and how as teachers we need to be more careful with our social media use. I have been to social media safety talks before but they were while I was in high school meaning they were always focused on internet safety from a teenage perspective. This one took a different perspective, focusing on professionalism, being aware of your online presence and understanding that even posts from years back can be found. These topics were ones I was aware of before however there were other details that I was not familiar with such as how information can be collected by places such as schools if you are using their WiFi. This session was super informative and helped me gain a lot of knowledge into the importance professionalism on social media and making sure you are aware of the posts you are featured in. I feel very lucky that I was at the end of the generation that didn’t have a lot of social media so that I was not using these sites until I was in high school and had some common sense.
